Hair constitutes a major aspect of one’s beauty. People might choose to call this notion of thick lustrous hair as a stereotypical standard of beauty, however, this does not change the fact that a healthy mane is what every individual demands, irrespective of their gender (unfortunately, the mind is thoroughly conditioned with stereotypes). Hair problems and diseases are of various kinds. Hair fall, and hair growth issues are the two most commonly encountered problems (if you have hair on your head, there’s no way you can remain unaffected by the two evils!).
Hair fall and hair growth issues can be treated by regulating one’s diet, consumption of hair growth supplements, and application of oils, lotions or serums. Introducing foods that promote hair growth, and regular scalp massages with non -medicated, herbal oils that stimulate hair growth is far better alternative than introducing artificial, chemical stimulators as it leads to a long lasting effect and keeps hair healthy for a longer period of time even if there is some fluctuation in the routine.
One of the most ancient and highly effective remedies to deal with hair fall, hair growth issues and other hair problems is the application of kalonji (black seed) oil. The oil is rich in zinc, phosphorous, iron, thymoquinone, antioxidants, fatty acids making it an ideal remedy for all hair related problems. Black seed oil is a natural emollient packed with vitamins which enables it to increase blood flow to the hair follicles when massaged on the scalp. The blood flow accelerates the absorption of the oil thereby providing enhanced nourishment to hair. Kalonji oil benefits for hair by preventing hair loss, initiating hair re-growth and accelerating growth, eradicating dandruff, preventing premature graying, and conditioning and strengthening hair from roots to ends. Moreover, the oil neutralizes the effects of free radicals thereby preventing any further damage. It has anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral properties that maintain scalp health by regulating the production of sebum.
Kalonji oil can be used in the following ways to tackle basic hair troubles such as hair fall, hair growth, and dryness and frizz:
- For Curbing Hair Fall and Promoting Regrowth– Work the required amount of oil in between your palms to warm it up. Apply the oil directly to the scalp, closer to the roots. Massage the oil well into the scalp especially where there are bald patches. Massage enhances blood flow accelerating the absorption of oil and curbing hair fall while promoting hair growth.
- For Conditioning– Kalonji oil contains fatty acids which allow it to tame frizz and add luster to hair. The oil can either be used as it is, or it can be mixed with other oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, and almond oil. The ratio of kalonji to either of the three oils should be 1:1
- For Strengthening Hair– Kalonji oil can be consumed orally to strengthen hair from within. The amount of oil to be consumed depends on the person’s body type or how much one’s body can take. It is often recommended to start with small quantity, as less as two to three drops. Based on the effect it produces on one’s body, the quantity can be regulated.
- To Prevent Premature Greying– Black seed oil has linoleic acid which makes up for the lost melanin. The oil should be massaged not only on the scalp but also applied to across the length for it to fulfill the purpose.
Being patient for the results and consistent with the application of kalonji oil is what will cure hair troubles effectively. The above remedies should be repeated every alternate day, or at least two to three times a week. The oil should be left on for at least an hour before shower. It would be ideal to leave the treatment on overnight, especially when the black seed oil is used as it is.
